Building Division:

Overall goal is to ensure the public safety and health for all as it relates to building and construction practices

This is achieved through the application of the International Building Code of 2000 as adopted through the State of Georgia’s Department of community Affairs (DCA)

Functions of the Building Division:

• Issues city of Thomasville Contractor Licenses to qualified individuals
  o This license is needed to pull required permit before construction can begin
  o 2007 there will be a statewide licensure system setting a unified qualification standard system for all contractors
• Building plan review for building code compliance
• Landscape plan review for municipal code compliance
  o Tree preservation
• Issues permits for qualified jobs
• Provides contractor/builder education
  o Direct on the site education
  o In office consultations
  o Meet and Greet functions
• Conducts inspection
  o Structural
  o Plumbing
  o Electrical
  o HVAC (heating and air conditioning) and Gas
  o Applies to new construction, rehabilitation, remodel, accessory structures
• Issues Certificate of Occupancy (CO) for residential and commercial structures
  o New construction
  o New occupant (new business moving in to existing structure)
• Application of Code Enforcement sections of Municipal Ordinance

Planning & Zoning Division:

Overall goal is to ensure the public safety and health for all as it relates to zoning, code enforcement, and community development. In addition this division is responsible for the protection and improvement of the quality of life for all that live and visit in Thomasville.

This is achieved through the application of zoning standards, municipal ordinance, staff support to various city boards, neighborhood outreach, comprehensive plan compliance review, and a host of other community involvement activities.

Functions of the Planning Division:

• Application of zoning standards through site plan review
• Junk cars/yards
• Weeded/overgrown lots
• Unfit housing
• Condemnation of unsafe housing
• Temporary banner permits
• Enforcement mechanism for Building/Planning division
• Stop work orders
• Citation to Municipal Court for code violations
• Staff support to various city boards
• Planning & Zoning
• Zoning Board of Appeals
• Historic Preservation Board
• Architectural Review Board
• Neighborhood Outreach
• Neighborhood Pride
• Neighborhood Improvement Project (NIP)
• Comprehensive plan compliance/review
• Facilitate with consultants the Thomasville – Thomas County Comprehensive Plan review process
• Administrative Panel
• Citizen advisory Panel
• Public Process
• Quality of Life improvements
• Corridor
• Housing
• Recreation
